Montessori Preschool Education
Academics is just one component of a well-rounded pre-school education. With cultural studies, children can learn about the environment they live in, the culture that surrounds them and find their passion for art and music. Cultural StudiesCultural studies keep children's natural wonder and love for learning alive. In science, the students move from studying living versus non-living things to the exploration of botany, biology and geography. We incorporate projects, field trips and natural observation to reinforce learning and bring scientific concepts alive. Children also expand their appreciation for other cultures by preparing and enjoying foods from around the world. They learn traditional folk tales, songs, dances, arts and crafts, and research and prepare reports about the continents they are studying. The studies of the school year culminate in a marvelous international festival that serves as the high point of the school year. Art and MusicAll academic work in the classroom can be connected with art and music. Learning through the arts helps students enjoy learning. Also, when information is processed in an active, musical or artistic way, the knowledge becomes permanent and the creative part of the brain is strengthened. At Montessori Country Academy, we display reproductions of great masterpieces at a child's eye level to prompt awareness of beauty, shape and color. A variety of high-quality art materials are available whenever inspiration strikes. Music is likewise a part of every day in the Montessori classroom as we integrate song, movement, instruments and improvisation into many parts of the school day. Our youngest students experience rhythm using their own speech, through songs and poems interpreted dramatically and embellished with percussive sounds and melodies. We then incorporate creative and imitative movements to foster self-expression and teach melodic patterns. Later, melodies are performed on class instruments. The Outdoor EnvironmentAt Montessori Country Academy, we believe the outdoor environment is an extension of the indoor curriculum. Our acre-sized property space allows for a wonderful variety of outdoor activity ranging from organized games and free play to the planting and harvesting of vegetable and flower gardens. Students love the sensorial experience of grinding fresh herbs from the herb garden and arranging the flowers they cut in beautiful vases for their own classroom. An array of friendly animals - lizards, turtles, parakeets, rabbits and egg-laying hens - provide hands-on lessons about animal life, animal care, and the importance of loving and respecting all creatures. In July, we explore "Life on the Farm" with more in depth studies of how the earth provides all we need to survive. This culminates with "Farm Day at MCA", when we harvest our own strawberries to make homemade jam, churn butter from fresh cream, husk corn and participate in tin-smithing, quilting and carpentry. Personally serving the Elk Grove and Sacramento areas. | |||||||||
