MCA has been wonderful for our daughter, who has spent the past year in the toddler classroom. We have had the same teachers all year. The teachers are calm, friendly and in control of their classroom. They truly care about their students and care about their progress. Even though I am impressed with the knowledge my daughter is acquiring, I am more impressed with her helpfulness, kindness and listening skills. Her teachers in Sunday School are constantly saying how helpful she is in cleaning up after herself, cleaning up after others and overall kindness to others (my daughter is 2). Even around the house she assists with sweeping, cleaning up, mopping, assisting with dishes. She loves helping with anything and MCA teaches these little kids life skills as well as school readiness.
MCA has a variety of events throughout the year that involve the parents as well. 2 of the events I attended were open house night and Montessori in the home, where an instructor went over how to incorporate the Montessori method in the home as well. They also offer several field trips for the 3-5yr classroom throughout the year.
I have had kids enrolled in several of the area preschools in Elk Grove and this is the 1 school that I refer people.
Lastly, the office staff have been very helpful this past year. They respond to your emails the same day and are willing to change your schedule if needed. We are very happy with Montessori Country Academy and look forward to the transition to the older classroom when the time is right."
We relocated from the Bay Area last year where we had a wonderful daycare/pre-school for my 2 year old son -- I was so worried that we would not be able to find anything like it in Elk Grove. I toured 13 different places in EG and nothing felt right until I walked into MCA. My son loves it there and we are so happy with his progress and development. The teachers in the 18m-3yo room are fantastic - we love Ms. Anchelle, Ms. Tracy, Ms. Crystal, and Ms. Ashprit. They are very attentive to our son's needs and have helped him develop his communications, social, and problem solving skills over the past year. I cannot believe how well they work with the children - very calmly, but with purpose. When they were closed for Spring Break, my son cried and kept asking for his teachers!
Some of the other reviewers commented on the lack of communication with the directors. I have not experienced this because every time I had a concern, I simply sent an email and I would get a response usually within 24-48 hours. It is true that for a while (until recently) there was no one routinely in the office. Honestly, I didn't have a problem that no one was in the office because I care more that they are spending money on having good teachers on the floor rather than someone at a desk all day. However, they recently hired a part time office manager, who is super helpful and responsive. In addition, they are very proactive about communicating by email about upcoming events, issues, and paperwork, etc. Moreover, they provide a daily report and monthly calendar. Plus, as a parent, I feel that it is my duty to get to know and talk to the teachers and ask about my son's day -- every day.
As for the curriculum, it is true that they are not certified Montessori, but as anyone who has researched about Montessori knows, it is pretty uncommon to be certified as a preschool. I would encourage you to learn about Montessori if you are thinking about signing up here or anywhere frankly. Montessori is about letting children progress at their own pace and about learning problem solving and life skills, including the importance of play, self-care, and communications. If you are looking for a rigorous pre-school that ensures you child knows how to write, read, and do multiplication by kindergarten, I think this is not the place for you -- Montessori is not for you then. They may very well learn these things at MCA, but a lot of it is dependent upon the child and their direction. And that is okay because everyone has the right to seek what works for their child and family. If you are wanting your child to learn self-direction, play based learning, creativity, and simply enjoy their 18mo-5yo life, this is a great place for you.
"I have 2 children enrolled at MCA (my son in the toddler class and daughter in the pre-K class). I've seen them both flourish in their development. I appreciate how attentive the teachers are of my children. The teachers in the toddler class have gone above and beyond for my son who has special needs. They've really gotten to know him and do what they can to help him thrive. My daughter has really begun to communicate with us. Before starting here, she barely spoke. She now sings me songs about "us(ing) soft voices and mak(ing) good choices." She just moved from the transition class. Her teachers in that class were wonderful. I would ask how she was doing and they would keep me informed of her progress and any concerns they had. I'm very glad we decided on this school for our kids. I feel they are cared for and are being guided to make good choices in the future. The assistant manager is awesome too. She has been very supportive and has provided me with so much guidance regarding my son. Thank you MCA!"
